Comments: Dear David, I felt compelled to write to you and thank for your exhibition taking place throughout Northern Ireland which has put us back in touch with a very old friend of my family's, who was very good friends with my grandmother, Hessie Topping, who lived in Ballyclare. This friend went to your exhibition and was amazed to find that there was a photo of my gran's brother, Edward Girvan, which used to hang in her living room, which in turn prompted her to get in touch with us again. My mum, Hessie Topping's daughter, lives in Essex and has not been back to Ulster very much since my gran died five years ago and has lost touch with many old friends so I would like to thank you for bringing us back together. I am based in London and don't think I'll be able to see your exhibition in person but it sounds fantastic - I think you told the Belfast Telegraph that it is the most worthwhile project you've been involved with. I think this unintended consequence of the exhibition only goes to show just how worthwhile it is and how important it is to the communities (ex-patriated included!) of the province. I would also like to ask for a favour. My gran's house unfortunately burned down about 8 years ago and this photo was lost, along with most of her possessions in the fire. I'm sure it would mean a great deal to my mother if she were able to have a copy of this photo. Do you know if it's possible to get a copy of the photo in question? Do you know where it was sourced from and do you know if I could get a copy? Or could I get a copy from you? The accompanying info by the photo is: Edward James Girvan, Age 23, Son of Samuel & Hessie Girvan, Ballynure. Rank: Stoker - 1st Class, Royal Navy, Died 10 December 1941, Memorial: Plymouth Naval Memorial, Grave/Memorial ref: Panel 53, Column 1. He served on the HMS Repulse and died when it was attacked and sunk on its way to Singapore. Any information about how I could get this, would be gratefully received. If you were able to reproduce the photo, I would naturally be happy to send you any funds (either by cheque/electronic transfer) to cover printing and postage and for your time. I look forward to hearing from you. Kindest regards, Stephen Fishleigh

Comments: David I visited your display with my aging father during the week. May I congratulate you on a marvellous display, which has taken an immense amount of work and expense. Your tour through the major historical battles from the nineteenth century was both fascinating and educational. Again may I congratulate you on your efforts, particularly from the point of view that you sought to involve the many children present. Many of your items were very interesting, and it is not many who would be prepared to offer to the audience the chance to handle such items of interest as the original telegram that was received on the battlefront announcing that hostilities would cease on 11 November 1918. My father and I particularly enjoyed seeing that. You and I enjoy a few things in common. You share the name of your grandfather who fought in the Great War and I share the name of my grandfather who fought in the Great War, William Close Davidson (King Edward's Horse, Machine Gun Corps, Tank Corps). My grandfather fought at Passchendaele during the third battle of Ypres. He was from Dunadry, just seven miles from Ballyclare. I spoke with you at the exhibition and shall get together some details and arrange to send them to you. One thing I would suggest to you is adding a guestbook to your site to try to enlist support for you to get a permanent site for your collection. We use one our our site provided free by smartgb.com but there are, of course, others. I have had great service from smartgb and the site allows you to customise the page/s to fit in with the theme of your site. Anyway, I do hope that you are successful in getting a permanent site. You very much deserve it. With every best wish, Keith (William Keith Davidson)
